Happy Independence Day!

Aloha Friends!

I was happily surprised when I logged into the website this afternoon! As you may have noticed, I have been having major issues with the blog. It was nearly impossible to update my diary with new posts because the background was black! Like typing in the dark. My last few posts at the end of 2018 were very difficult. I had contacted the host, who wasn’t able to offer any hope. But, today we’re back to a white background! Yay! I’m stoked to get back to blogging.

Happy Independence Day everyone! We’re having a great day here on Kauai. Barbecue is on, potato salad made, fireworks bought and smores for later. Here’s a few photos from today...

Aloha friends,

Wishing you and yours a very merry Christmas! We went down to Kalapaki bay this afternoon to see the sand sculpture....it made front page news in the local newspaper. The sculpture held up well despite the 2” of rain we got last night! Here’s hoping that all of you held up just as well through the Christmas craziness! Mele Kalikimaka!

Kauai Holiday Light Parade

Aloha friends,
Every year Kauai celebrates the holidays with the Lights on Rice Parade. I’ve always wanted to go as I’ve heard it was quite spectacular. This year we finally got to attend. There were 61 decorated floats and about 13,000 spectators. It was so much fun!

This is the float with the snow....it was actually bubbles. The kids loved it.

Lots of folks were making an evening of it, packing in dinner picnic style. I think we may do that next year. If you’re on island during the light parade, I highly recommend you check it out.

Thanks for reading my diary!

Aloha Friends!

Happy Halloween! It’s been a beautiful day here on Kauai. I don’t know if I told you but, last year it poured rain. So much so that we even got flash flood warnings! This year is quite the opposite. Sun is shining and we’re having a good time! The kids carved a couple pumpkins and I carved a pineapple. This evening we’ll go trick-or-treating. I hope you all are having a fun day too!

Summer is Here!

Aloha!

Summer has reached Kauai! With the weather warming up and beautiful clear skies it’s time to hit the beach. One of our favorite is Lydgate beach. After April’s awful storm the ponds at Lydgate were filled with fallen trees and debris. The shore was covered in logs. But, look at it now! I’m so happy to share this photo with you!

We got out to the beach last week with the kiddos. We packed lunch and away we went. Lydgate is a great beach for children as it is protected from large waves, it’s life guarded and has bathroom facilities. The water is nice for swimmers and snorklers who are not comfortable out in the open ocean. There were still quite a few fish to see, even after the storm. The kids enjoyed watching them. We had a fun day day at the beach. If you’d like to visit Lydgate beach, it’s located in Wailua, about 1 mile south of the condo.

Aloha and thanks for reading my diary!

We Got Some Rain!

Aloha Friends,

We’ve had record breaking amounts of rain on Kauai! In 24 hours on April 14 we had over 2 feet of rain! All of this rain caused flash flooding and landslides. The north shore took the brunt of the storm. Hanalei is nearly underwater, cars were overturned, many homes were flooded and farther north Kuhio highway is completely blocked by earth when the hillside collapsed onto the road.
Picture
The beaches are littered with fallen trees and debris. I took these photos the day after the storm. Above is Wailua bay looking north. The ponds at Lydgate are not looking too good, but clean up has already began. As evidenced by the large container near the shore.

What is amazing is that during this crazy weather no one was killed or seriously injured. We have much to be thankful for.

Kauai Sea Glass

Aloha Friends,

After a few weeks of overcast weather we've finally got some sunshine! I thought it would be a great day to take the kiddos out to the beach. As I was standing in the waves this beautiful piece of sea glass washed up! It appears to be the bottom of an old Heineken! I've found a lot of nice pieces there but, I think this one is my favorite.

The beach in front of the condo is a fun place to go treasure hunting. Along with beach glass, you can also find shells and pretty drift wood pieces at Waipouli beach.

Cheers!

Aloha friends and happy new year!
For a brief time, fireworks are sold everywhere here on Kauai. All the grocery stores, Walmart,  even Costco was selling a huge box as tall as me! So, we thought it might be fun to do something a little different this New Year's Eve...we played with sparklers at the beach.
Picture
Early in the evening we walked out to the beach and collected driftwood. My husband made a small fire. As we sat and watched the sunset the fire kept our toes toasty. After nightfall the kids were eager to light the sparklers. We had fun watching them laugh and play in the colorful night. My hubby and I lit a few too!

Merry Christmas all!

I hope that you all are enjoying a nice holiday with those you love. On Kauai the weather warmed up just in time for us to have a Christmas eve picnic on the beach. We stopped by Foodland for sushi, poi and fried chicken then headed over to Lydgate beach. I know, strange food combination but, it was tasty!

Lydgate beach was full of visitors soaking up the sunshine and playing in the water. The sun felt so good! As I was lounging on the sand I looked up towards the horizon and saw whales! They looked like they were having such a great time! Doing giant whale belly flops into the water, making huge splashes as they landed! So much fun to watch. It felt like an early Christmas gift.
